Go Obama!
I think Barack Obama is in way over his head. Way. He seems to still have "wow, I'm actually president!" moments just a little too often. He doesn't understand the big deal about shaking hands with our enemies or essentially getting spat at by Chavez who handed him an anti-American book in a language he doesn't understand (imagine the reverse, Obama handing Chavez an anti-Communist book in English as some sort of peace offering) . To quote IC "he's getting herbed and he doesn't even know it."
He really doesn't.
But the truth is, I'm still totally rooting for him. I hope I'm wrong and that his lalalala I can fix the whole world with my smile thing actually works out. Because if Obama succeeds, America succeeds. And when Obama does his daily idiotic thing, it's America that suffers.
I'm not saying sit back and give Obama a chance to do his thing, definitely not. We should fight Obama tooth and nail on that which we disagree. We should point out that giving a pound to a guy that hopes for America's destruction is maybe not the best idea. And maybe next time don't ram through legislation (the stimulus package) which no one seems to have read. But hope he succeeds. If he doesn't, we may win the next election but lose the proverbial war. So go Obama! He's president until 2012, at least, so we may as well hope he succeeds in strengthening America and fixing the economy (here's hoping he'll save lowering the oceans and ending all foreign wars for his possible second term). No, I don't think he will either but that's not what I'm rooting for.

I had one of those GoBama moments this weekend when they decided to boycott Durban II or whatever. You'll note that in the comments, I'M the racist, but Obama's fine as wine. Whatever. As long as I agree with the outcome!

Obama is not always going to do the wrong thing. So yes, obviously cheer him when your agree with him. But I'm saying hope that he's right in the things you disagree with him. I'd rather be wrong than America be screwed, you know?
Posted by: Karol at April 20, 2009 01:10 PMAbsolutely correct.
Posted by: bryan at April 20, 2009 01:13 PMAbsolutely correct.
If only your fellow leftists had felt the same way during the Bush years...

You mean like giving the legally blind British PM a set of region 1 DVDs? Oh, I can imagine it.
Posted by: Eric at April 20, 2009 01:44 PMYou mean like giving the legally blind British PM a set of region 1 DVDs? Oh, I can imagine it.
Hahahaha. I hadn't even heard about that!
Posted by: Karol at April 20, 2009 01:47 PMObviously, I want him to succeed with respect to national security, but I strongly disagree with his domestic policies. I'm concerned about the integrity of the next census.
I'm unhappy with him, but I don't have Obama Derangement Syndrome.
Posted by: KS at April 20, 2009 02:30 PM"He's president until 2012..."
Not the way I see it at all. I see torches, pitchforks, and a madding crowd coming up PA Ave, sometime before the mid-term election.
Posted by: Casca at April 20, 2009 03:05 PMA maddening crowd came for Bush lots of times, interrupted his speeches, threw things at him, called him Hitler, and still he was president for 8 years.
Posted by: Karol at April 20, 2009 03:07 PMWe however are serious people, and mean business when we decide to act.
Posted by: Casca at April 20, 2009 03:11 PMA maddening crowd came for Bush lots of times, interrupted his speeches, threw things at him, called him Hitler, and still he was president for 8 years.
Sure but Bush is a champion ducker. We'll have to see about Obama.
Posted by: Eric at April 20, 2009 05:23 PMAnyone who thinks Obama isn't going to be president until at least 2012 isn't thinking straight. This is America, we don't really do pitchforks.
Posted by: Karol at April 20, 2009 07:01 PMYeah, if it came down to it I'd take up arms to protect the constitution and the lawfully elected president.
Then when it was over I'd shoot myself.
Posted by: Eric at April 20, 2009 07:29 PMThen again, I've been watching a lot of anime lately.
Posted by: Eric at April 20, 2009 07:30 PMI don't want Obama to succeed on domestic issues...why would I want him to succeed on those issues with his policies?
I want him to succeed in foreign policy, but this naive liberal bullshit policy of having everyone love us does not give me hope.
Posted by: Larry at April 21, 2009 12:58 AMBut Larry, you don't want him to succeed because you think those policies are a bad idea and won't work. I agree with you. But I'd rather be wrong than have America fail under his policies.
Posted by: Karol at April 21, 2009 09:49 AMWhat do you mean by "America will fail"? In what enterprise? If in one vaguely outlined by the current White House tenant - his enterprise is bound to fail, and sooner the better, as I said before: there will be less debris to clean afterward. And I'm not putting forward any effort or even thought that might help him and his minders.
The slogan should be Obama, go down, rather than Go Obama.
Posted by: Tatyana at April 21, 2009 11:40 AMKarol, you've obviously spent way too much time in the sun lately...
can you name one time in our history where these left wing policies worked?
Posted by: Larry at April 21, 2009 11:55 AMSome people have a model of what is 'right', and if the outcomes are bad, it's the world's fault, not the fault of their model. They celebrate, as someone else I read says, the 'J'-ness. So sure of the distinction between right and wrong that they are blind to the actual world around them. These people are the righteous.
Some people have no sense of right or wrong, they just keep adjusting their model to the world that they observe. They have no posts in the ground that say, "You are here" [and here is 'good' or 'bad'], outcomes are only either what-I-want or not-what-I-want. So enthralled by the world that they perceive that they are overwhelmed trying to reason about it. These people are the relativists.
Both of these approaches have the appeal of ideological purity and the lack of actual critical thinking required to execute. Occam's Razor, maybe, but really only with the ragged edge that comes with a month of leg and face shavings. It takes a strong, confident person to believe strongly in ideas of 'right' and 'wrong' and still be amenable to the idea that things they classify as either may be neither.
I make comments to tease you about your propaganda. Here is the "Karol, you are a badass, and I admire you for it," comment.
[As for the actual politics, I don't think we've had enough time to draw valid conclusions; Some elements of the administration are actually going a pretty good job; but others, whoo-weee, a-m-a-t-e-u-r-s; and they scare me].
Posted by: David at April 21, 2009 01:03 PMWait a minute, K.
Obama wants to give health care to everyone, meaning robbing some to pay for services others consume. Why should you want him to succeed there?
He wants other nations to "like" us, by making concession after concession. Why should you want him to succeed there, either?
He wants Americans to "give back more to their communities," by setting up programs through which we can do community service and earn "credits"...which is actually getting back the tax monies taken from us in the first place.
He wants a cleaner environment, but by instituting "cap and trade" on every gaseous byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion. This will wreck the U.S. economy and set us back decades in energy production (and thus our standard of living).
I could go on. It isn't just the goals, but also the means. Obama's various goals cannot be achieved without domestic socialism and the destruction of U.S. sovereignty.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at April 22, 2009 12:27 AMKarol, when I said "Absolutely correct", and you lamented what had happened during the Bush years, I became confused. You have stated that you hope that your president succeeds, but feel it is right to call him when he does things you do not like. I'm ok so far. Then you say that the people who expressed dissent during W's term should have been like this (I think). I thought that they were, and when they were, you called them unamerican.
I'm not trying to praise your 'left' or be negative about you (and by extension the 'right' in general), but the idea that you express dissent in a general framework of support (The title in the UK is Her Majesties Loyal Opposition) is how a democracy should run.
Perhaps you should notice now that the mainstream democratic party leaning critics during W's tenure did exactly what you have said, and were met with accusations of supporting terrorism. Indeed W actually made this assertion himself.
Are you now saying that the dissent these people expressed was right? (In the sense of I detest what you say, but will defend your right to say it way?).
Bryan, find me one instance when I called people who disagreed with W unAmerican. One instance, go.
Posted by: Karol at April 24, 2009 11:01 AMIt's a bit of a get out, but I refer you to my
"I'm not trying to...be negative about you (and by extension the 'right' in general)".
It's just not your style to do this Karol. You're unlikely to say, for example, Palestinians are bad, but you do often use the by-line "Give these people a state!". It's just your style. There are people who have on this site, confirmed that they feel dems are terrorists/enablers/similar when I mentioned the Sept 30th 2006 speech of GW Bush saying something like "America suffers, and the terrorists win" if you vote dem. I think this a vote losing stance from the reps at all levels (have said it many times).
So anyway, do you think that the people who opposed W during his tenure were in the main the patriots and paragons of democracy? If no, why?
If yes, is this because you are in their place now?
