He's just happy to be here

Have you ever seen a happier prisoner?

Usually I'm such a hard ass when it comes to punishment but something about this situation just seems so sad. I know that poverty is no excuse for piracy/hostage taking...plenty of the world is extremely poor and they don't turn to a life of crime and murder.
But I can't help but think that under different circumstances and an education that this kid could of been so much more than just someone who is going to spend the majority of his life locked up in a cell.
Like I said on the Twitter machine (@kenwheaton!) ... why's he smiling? Cuz he's in our legal system rather than his own legal system.
Posted by: Ken at April 21, 2009 10:34 AMThat dude is super excited to be in NY. Various thoughts running through his head:
"New-f____-York!!!! Never thought I'd get to visit"
"I'm a celebrity! The other pirates are never gonna believe this!"
"Can anyone recommend a good dentist?"
IC is funny:)

Posted by: Eric at April 21, 2009 10:53 AMIt would've been cool if the FBI put him in a Puffy shirt. They could tell him, "All FBI prisoners are always brought to court in a puffy shirt."
Of course, the media would've filmed the smiling pirate walking into the courthouse and no one would've gotten the joke except a certain number of viewers.
He should have been judged by summary court martial, and executed on the spot.

Posted by: Tatyana at April 21, 2009 02:15 PMTatyana is correct. Spending his life in our prison system is going to be one of the best things that ever happened to him. He'll be clothed, fed well, and he'll still make criminal contacts.

Bull's-eye!
Why are we letting this parasite steal our air?
How Pirates Are Punished
Posted by: Gerard at April 21, 2009 05:09 PMI'm with Tatyana. Normally I say, "Old enough to do the crime, old enough to fry," but he isn't even worth the electricity. We should have dealt with him in two ways: 1) Chain him to an anchor and toss him overboard, or 2) Fly over his family's house and drop him off...sans parachute.
Now he gets all the wonderful treatment that they never would have given Richard Phillips, or the UH-60 Black Hawk crew.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at April 22, 2009 12:19 AMIf he wants to be a pirate, give him a parrot and remove his eye and leg. A tricorn hat and away home.
