If we had even a fraction of their media savvy...
Obama seems to be giving up on the public option, mostly because he has no principles and popularity means more than doing what he believes to be right, and yet the AP story on this begins:
Bowing to Republican pressure and an uneasy public, President Barack Obama's administration signaled Sunday it is ready to abandon the idea of giving Americans the option of government-run insurance as part of a new health care system.
Oh that Republican pressure! I guess no one told Obama that the Democrats have, in addition to the presidency and the House of Representatives, a filibuster-proof majority of 60 in the Senate. And yet AP is blaming Republicans with stopping the public option instead of admitting Obama is an empty suit president who tried to ram through socialist medicine and failed. Please see headline of this post.

Don't believe for a second that IWon is giving up government controlled health care. First and foremost the administration is floating a trial balloon. BUT even if they do drop "public option", everyone needs to know two very important things.
1. Co-operatives: read anything they put out carefully, they would be controlled by a government panel and run under government rules along with being financed by taxpayers' money.
2. anything and everything that is passed in the Senate or House can be totally changed in "reconciliation" where a committee brings the two bills together.
Posted by: katablog at August 17, 2009 08:42 AM"Reconciliation" is a process whereby the senate can shut down debate without taking a cloture vote. What you're thinking about is a "conference committee" session that contains both House and Senate members.
In essence, this is correct. No bill can be passed to the president that the House and Senate don't agree on, hence conference committees.

Posted by: Terry Ann at August 17, 2009 09:31 AMThis administration is famous for changing the language every time they are loosing on an issue. Always with the goal of attempting to confuse the American people. Another famous liberal tactic is to either demonize individuals, corporations, or their political opposition, always the blame game with these people.
Posted by: Evelyn Ohlsen at August 17, 2009 09:37 AMThis is not a victory !
NONONE should celebrate this "Dropping of the public option". This fight is not over. When the nose of the camel is under the tent, it's here to stay. Over time the Dems will ammend, alter, update, change their bill into goverment run health care. This entire bill needs to be killed dead, dead, dead.
Posted by: Ron at August 17, 2009 09:46 AMCo-ops? Government sponsored? Government backed" Government funded? Gee, sounds just like the beginnings of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. "Free of government interference and pressures". We all know how that worked out. Can't wait to hear Barney Frank "roll the dice one more time" on health care.
Posted by: GarandFan at August 17, 2009 10:08 AMSure they will take it out but just like cap and tax at 3am in the morning one day all of the language will be dropped back in! Or they will pass it with "gaps" in the language to be filled in later, and it will be re-inserted then when no one is looking.
This would be dictator is not going to give up on 30 years worth of work to socialize this nation that easily. It's the old hey look over here while they shove something down our throats on the other side of the room.
Posted by: patriotparty1 at August 17, 2009 10:10 AMDon't worry.. there's still three years and 4 months left for him to keep trying!
Posted by: Ilpalazzo at August 17, 2009 10:14 AMI think we should be happy to take credit for killing this piece of shit option.
(Though it should be said that the co-op option is a public option in sheep's clothing, but the progressives will hopefully give him hell for dropping it.)
They're walking it back already.

Bzzzzt! Sorry, I need a judge's ruling on this.
Posted by: Jamie at August 17, 2009 10:33 AMThe AP is just another part of the administration's political operation.
What a great institution it used to be.
Posted by: Increase Mather at August 17, 2009 11:46 AMIt's not that we don't have media savvy, we don't have media access! Even if we wanted to reframe language like this in the mainstream media, who would let us outside of some internet blogs, Fox News, talk radio and maybe the WSJ?
Posted by: T. AKA Ricky Raw at August 17, 2009 12:11 PMSo is Obama a Socialist or does he have no principles?
I lean towards no principles. Why? Cause 95% of the suits in Washington have no principles. George W. Bush was opposed to nation building and pledged a humbler foreign policy. Newt was for Obama care and now is against it. As John Kerry cheerfully said, he was for it before he was against it. Bill Clinton....well nuff said. And Papa Bush? Read my lips.
And guess who also does not have much in the way of principles? The rabid fans. The Republicans who cheer bailouts when W does them but boo when Obama does them. The Democrats who hated wars under W but love them under Obama.
THIS IS THE WAR FOR OUR FREEDOM.
I WANT TO DIRECT MY OWN LIFE AND DEATH. NOT GOVERNMENT. PERIOD.
SO: FREEDOM TELLS ME
KILL THE BILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Jonas at August 17, 2009 12:34 PMIn the past election the Republicans gained a deep respect for the largest group of registered voters .. I' not talking about the Democrat, but rather the independents.
The Democrats only seem to notice independents during elections, much to their own peril.
Don't open the champagne just yet. Here's what will happen:
1. The public option will be dropped to make the bill more palatable, to gain "bipartisan support."
2. The new bill will regulate insurers so much that they'll be driven out of business by these "consumer-owned nonprofit cooperatives." Here is the Trojan horse. If these "cooperatives," which will be seeded by tax dollars, are not a "public option," then what are they?
3. Voilà, Obama & Co. will say, "Now we definitely need a public option to replace the lack of coverage that private insurers can no longer provide." The "cooperatives" will be expanded and given carte blanche with tax dollars.
It's not hard to foresee this. We know the tricks well enough.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at August 17, 2009 02:13 PMOh yes, let me add: Weiner is such a prick. God, what a fitting name.
"leaving private insurance companies the job of controlling the costs of health care is like making a pyromaniac the fire chief."
The absurdity of his analogy should not need to be explained.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at August 17, 2009 02:14 PMJonas you are right, this is a war for our freedom. I don't have time to rewrite it all, so please go to http://mikefromnc.wordpress.com and check my post.
